Leadership Can Make or Break Engagement

That’s why Kelly Walls, the company’s senior vice president of human resources, said she spends a great deal of her time making sure the right managers are in the right jobs.

“[Managers and leaders] set the tone in an organization,” she said. “And the way we go about making our decisions, the way we go about executing our business plan is what drives the culture, and employees are going to respond to whatever that tone is.”

Good managers and leaders must therefore make it their mission to ensure employees are challenged and used properly. “What really drives engagement with employees at all levels is if they actually like the work that they’re doing,” Walls said. “… And secondly, if they enjoy the person they’re working for.”
