Report: Staffing Industry Added 20,100 Jobs in January

Washington — Feb. 3

Seasonally adjusted employment data released Friday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) indicated that the staffing industry added 20,100 new jobs from December to January. In a year-to-year comparison, temporary help employment for the month was 7 percent higher than in January 2011.

Non-seasonally adjusted BLS data, which estimate the actual number of jobs in the economy, indicated the staffing industry shed 236,400 jobs (down about 9 percent) from December to January. On a year-to-year basis, there were nearly 8 percent more staffing employees in January compared with the same month in 2011.

A decline in staffing employment is normal for this time of year; from 2000 to 2010, the decline in staffing employment from December to January averaged 8.5 percent.
